Coventry High School


Introduction

Coventry High school is a two story building set in the Town of Coventry, Rhode Island. The school is surrounded by a growing community. This school takes pride in their mission statement that is hung throughout the school, “The mission of Coventry High School is to challenge our students to meet high academic and ethical standards in a safe and supportive environment of mutual respect. We are committed to providing our students with clear instruction and criteria to develop the knowledge, skills, character, and cultural awareness to become productive and responsible citizens”. (Coventry HIgh School, 2009)

Community Background

The community of Coventry has a total population of 35,420 people in 2005-2007. It is one of the bigger towns in Rhode Island. The majority of this town is not very diverse as others in Rhode Island. Most of the population is considered white.

As you can tell from the chart there is very little diversity in the town. The numbers for population of a different race other than white are low. The community has recently gone through a few changes over the past years. There is a new plaza in Coventry and is growing larger every year. It is called the Center of New England. It has big familiar stores recently built such as, super Wal-Mart, Home Depot, BJ’s, and a bunch of other businesses.

The two neighborhoods surrounding Coventry high school are Wood Estates and North Wood Estates. The neighborhoods in Coventry are very well organized. The communities seem to be close knit. The amount of crime reported in 2000 was 4,643 accounts. This would all include anything from rape to motor vehicle thefts. In the year 2000 there were zero murders in the town of Coventry. The total number of arrests in the year 2000 was 5,537.

In the year 2000, there were a total number of 13,063 housing units in Coventry. The total number of rented housing units was 2,338. Coventry makes up almost 50% of Rhode Island’s renter occupied housing units. The average number of renter occupied housing was 2.07. The average number of rooms per household was 4.06. For the entire state of Rhode Island the average number of renter occupied housing units was 4.12. The average amount paid for renting in Coventry was 491 dollars per month. In Rhode Island the amount paid for rent was 477 dollars. The average number of number of household members is 2.76. The average number of rooms per household is 6.24. In Coventry the average price for a house was $123,900, compared to Rhode Island where it was $130,500 in the year 2000.

District Summary

Superintendent of Schools in Coventry Mr. Kenneth Di Pietro and assistant superintendent is Mr. Michael Convery. According to info works the teachers’ response rate for the SALT Survey was 82% and for the state was only 55%. The parent response rate was lower with only 36%. The attendance policy in Coventry is very strict. This district takes pride in children coming to school, the district has a total of 96% student attendance. The student teacher ratio is 1:12.

In the Coventry School district there are 87% eligible for free or reduced price lunches and 13% eligible. There is also an option for pre-paid lunches. According to the Coventry School Committee’s wellness plan, they came up with the policy “to promote and encourage the healthy lifestyles of our students and staff by offering opportunities to learn about and practice proper nutrition and improve physical fitness”.

The dropout rate in Coventry is 5% and in Rhode Island it is 11%. There were a number incidences where a student was punished in school, out of school, or alternate programs, all together there were 1,090 incidences. There are 469 teachers in this district and 14,160 in the state of Rhode Island. The total number of students in Coventry is 5,417. The total per pupil expenditure is $11,645 and total expenditure is $63,080,965. In this district there is a total of seven public schools. There is one high school which is Coventry High School. There also is now one middle school. The town of Coventry just recently this year combined the two middles schools in the town to form one called Allen Shawn
Feinstein Middle School of Coventry. There are five elementary schools in Coventry; Black Rock Elementary, Tiogue Elementary, Hopkins Hill Elementary, Washington Oak Elementary, and Western Coventry Elementary.


School Analysis

Coventry High School is a very well organized and caring school. The teachers in Coventry are determined to make you meet their personal and academic standards. Each teacher has their own unique ways of teaching. The high school does expect students to be pushed to the best of their ability according to the mission statement. This allows the teachers to teach the way they want to while bettering the students. Coventry High schools environment is very connected to teachers and children and their school work. In the info works 2008 the percentage of teachers is about 90% that say they interact with students that show interest and respect. The high school is in decent condition. There is occasional leaking of the roof and just minor problems with heat and air conditioning. Coventry’s track around the football field is not in the best of shape. The track is all asphalt which enables Coventry to hold track events at their school. The high school does not have the best outdoor facilities which cause issues with the way the teams play.

Coventry has many sports teams to try to get students involved, some of the teams consist of Football, Baseball, Softball, Soccer, Basketball, Cross Country, Track and Field, Volley Ball, Tennis, Wrestling, Hockey, and Golf. Coventry also offers a wide variety of clubs such as Cheer leading, Science Club, Science club, Chess club, Foreign language, Dance, Swing team, these are some of the more popular clubs but Coventry offers a wide variety of clubs than most schools. Coventry High school is unique with the career and tech program they offer there. Some of the career programs offered is cosmetology, child development, nursing, carpentry. Some students are coming from other schools to have the chance in the career and tech programs.

According to the infor works website for 2007 Coventry HIgh school met al requirments for No Child Left Behind (NCLB). In the catagorys of English language the target to meet was 68.8 and the school passed that with 87.3. Also in the category of mathematics the target score was 54.o and the school also passed that with 81.7. The graduation rate target for this report in the school year of 2006-2007 was 75.3, this school over a chieved that target and got a score of 95.2. This school has met their requirements.



Conclusion

Coventry High School sets high standards for itself and continues to strive for those standards. They are improving little by little on the things that need improvement. The NCLB score are very high and met all requirments in all areas. Over the years as shown in the data collected Coventry is a growing community. Coventry High School has a lot to offer its students. The connection between the teachers and students is very important in having a productive school. Coventry High School manages to have a high percentage of connection between student and teachers. Over all this school and community is very well put together and deserves any credit for their programs to better the children that attend these schools.
